My passion for education equity began at a young age when I was part of the student activist movement in Apartheid South Africa. I have had the opportunity to live and work in three countries and in each of those countries I have been exposed to education whether as a learner or in management.
This has given me a unique insight into the environment of education of the education coin. Having witnessed and exposed corruption and leadership incompetence in a public school made me question the system as it stands.
This inspired my Master’s degree journey, forming the basis of my academic research question. “How are school principals selected, prepared and supported for the important role they have within the public education space?” The public education system serves a greater purpose in society and requires effective and functional leadership and management.
I conducted my post-graduate research on school leadership and management, which led me to analyse a number of public education systems. The results and findings of the research highlighted why some public education systems excel and why many fail.
School leadership is one of the key drivers of successful school outcomes for learners and educators alike and must be guided by well-designed processes, which are supported by training, and the development of appropriate skills. This is my area of expertise, and where I am able to contribute to the improvement of public education.
